ARTIST STATEMENT - I've developed a unique art style that strives to elevate the craft of woodcarving to fine art sculpture.  My inspiration comes from nature, specifically animals with striking colors and shapes. I’m fascinated by their symbolism and our relationship to them in the natural or built world. I interpret these subjects through bold, graphic design and allow the carved sections to create a natural gradient through shadow. Each wood slab is sourced from a local sawmill, ensuring ethically sourced material and proper kiln drying process. I carve using a series of small gouges and each piece can take hundreds of hours. When I paint, I use ultra matte acrylics that bring the vibrancy of the colors to life. The overall composition, level of detail and craftsmanship are critical to me because the piece stands out from far away, but gets more interesting closer you get to it.
